Ruling party CPP Wins general election in Cambodia

PHNOM PENH – The ruling Cambodian People’s Party (CPP) won a majority vote in the general election on Sunday, 29 July’2018 according to National Election Committee (NEC)’s preliminary results. CPP’s spokesman Sok Eysan confirmed the victory, saying that the CPP won more than 80 percent of the votes.

According to the National Election Committee’s preliminary results broadcast on the state-owned National Television of Cambodia, the votes that the people supported the CPP were over 80 percent. Based on the statistics report, election committee official said that CPP wins the election with higher majority in the National Assembly once again.

Main political opponent of ruling Party (CNRP) slammed the outcome. Vice president Mu Sochua (CNRP) quoted in press conference “election a fraud and manipulated, no democratic procedures followed”. The European Election observer and US state department has expressed same view and supported opponent party’s view who are questioning ruling CPP government and Election committee for not conducting free and fair election.

A total of 20 political parties contested in this election to elect 125 lawmakers for the National Assembly. Among them are the ruling Cambodian People’s Party (CPP) of Prime Minister Samdech Techo Hun Sen, the Funcinpec Party of Prince Norodom Ranariddh, the League for Democracy Party of former opposition lawmaker Khem Veasna.

The provisional results will be released on Aug. 11, and the official ones will be publicized on 15th August.
